Starstruck Season 1 Recap: Everything You Need to Know Before Season 2

Normal girl meets celebrity guy, they instantly fall madly in love, get married, and live happily ever after? Definitely not. Starstruck follows the story of New Zealander every-girl, Jessie (Rose Matafeo), who is muddling her way through her 20s, living in London trying to make sense of her life when she accidentally entangles herself with movie star Tom (Nikesh Patel).

Created and written by Rose Matafeo with the help of Alice Snedden and directed by Karen Maine (Obvious Child), Season 1 of Starstruck premiered in 2021. Quickly becoming BBC Three’s highest-rated new comedy, the show was happily greenlit for a second season, which premiered on February 7, 2022.

Viewers in the US can watch Season 1 of Starstruck on HBO Max. Season 2 is yet to be added to the streaming service but it should be arriving sometime in 2022. The second season has been critically acclaimed and very popular in the UK so it should be quite the treat once it’s released on HBO Max. And just in case you forgot a few of the details from Season 1, here’s a recap of the six-episode season that made us think that dating a celebrity could actually work.

The Meet-Cute

Making the most of their carefree lives, a reticent Jessie and her excitable roommate and best friend, Kate (Emma Sidi), go out clubbing to celebrate New Year’s Eve. While Kate quickly finds a guy-friend she’s interested in talking to, Jessie is left to her own devices and entertainment. As the night progresses, the audience empathizes with Jessie as she waits in a painful queue for the female bathroom, meanwhile noticing the empty male bathroom.

Unable to resist the allure of no wait time, she walks into the men’s room and promptly distracts herself with incredibly awkward “James, James Bond” impressions to herself in the mirror. Unexpectedly, a man walks out of a cubicle and corrects her on her Bond impression. The second-hand embarrassment felt by the audience goes completely unnoticed by Jessie as she begins to lay into Tom about why he was in a cubicle. From the very beginning, they have banter and chemistry that is funny enough to feel genuine.

Becoming the Other Woman

Waking up in Tom’s fancy apartment the next morning after spending the night together, still unaware of Tom’s celebrity, it is a half-covered poster that Jessie sees on her way out that makes her realize Tom’s profession and identity. After confronting him about this and bickering about whether it was ever mentioned the previous night, she discovers that he also has a girlfriend that he never mentioned. Disappointed by this discovery, Jessie leaves Tom’s apartment without saying anything only to be confronted by the paparazzi who assume that she is his cleaner, instead of his new love interest.

Moving On

After setting aside the connection between them on New Year’s Eve, both Tom and Jessie continue on with their lackluster lives, without making any real bonds or relationships with anyone else. Looking for more depth in his roles and arguably, his life. After months of not speaking, Tom reaches out to Jessie to ask for her help to prepare for an upcoming Australian audition. They quickly settle into their usual pattern of easy conversation and banter that has now become familiar and comfortable between them, and part of the fun for audiences. Kate extends an invitation to Tom to stay for dinner, which he gratefully accepts, despite there not being too much room or food for him. Evident to the audience is the way that, although Tom is famous and surrounded by ‘civilians’, he blends in easily with Jessie and her friends. While both Tom and Jessie are hopeful for the future of their relationship after this dinner, the evening ends with a misunderstanding and sabotage that causes them to part ways – yet again – as friends.

The Film Screening

Another couple of months go by and an invitation to the premiere screening of Tom’s latest film arrives for Kate in the mail. Added as a plus-one, Jessie and Kate both attend. While Kate is engrossed by the film, Jessie thinks it’s terrible, as does Tom, who is embarrassed to be associated with it. Avoiding watching the film, Tom and Jessie bump into each other hiding in the bathroom. Ending up in Tom’s hotel room, Jessie provides Tom with support for his work in the bad film, and again, their spark and genuine care is rekindled, at least until Tom’s ex-girlfriend, who he is also dating again, appears in their hotel room, and Jessie is hurriedly stuffed into the bathroom to hide for the evening. Betrayed again, the two have a volatile argument about the differences between them, ending with them parting ways.

The Pre-Christmas Dinner

Bringing the season to a close, Christmas-time has arrived. Sparked by her existential crisis following her argument with Tom and losing her job, Jessie decides that her time in England wasn’t successful and her best option is to go home to New Zealand. Similarly down and struggling to find meaning and motivation in his life, Tom breaks up with his girlfriend – again. Shopping for a pre-Christmas and going-away dinner for Jessie, Kate bumps into Tom and invites him to join them.

After an initially strange but welcome greeting, Jessie mentions that she’s planning on permanently leaving the next day. Both apologize for the harsh words exchanged in their argument months before and ultimately they admit to wanting to stay in each other’s lives. Jessie is still planning on going home though. Having spent all night talking and reticent to leave one another, Tom offers to walk Jessie to the bus stop. The bus arrives, they hop on together and ride it to Jessie’s stop. The bus driver stops and waits for them to hop off. Neither move, and the bus keeps driving.

Season 2 of Starstruck premiered on February 7, 2022, with new episodes airing weekly on BBC Three.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has paid tribute to Australian cricket legend Shane Warne following the tragic news of his death.

The iconic Australian cricketer died on Friday aged 52 of a suspected heart attack.

Adored by millions around the world, the charismatic Warne is considered by many as the greatest bowler to ever play the game.

His illustrious international career spanned 15 years and saw him take 708 Test wickets – the most ever by an Australian and only behind Muttiah Muralitharan in the all-time standings – as well as the most wickets taken in Ashes history with a stunning 195.

Shane Warne was one of cricket’s great characters (

He retired from international cricket in 2007 after Australia whitewashed England 5-0 in 2006-07 Ashes series but continued playing first-class and List A cricket with Hampshire until the end of the county season.

Vaughan, who played against Warne numerous times in the Ashes, befriended the spin-bowler and took to social media to pay tribute.

“I can’t tell you how hard it is to get this down in words .. it’s just doesn’t feel real to be talking about someone who once was an enemy on the pitch to one who became a great friend off it,” Vaughan wrote on Instagram. “Shane was the greatest ever cricketer but more than that his character lit up every dressing room , comm box , bar , golf club & friendship group .. his energy & positivity was beyond anyone I have ever known .. he was loyal beyond loyal .. at a time I needed support he was the first to pick up the phone & over advice /help & the most utmost support.

“I will never ever forget the warmth he & his family gave me this winter when I was down under for Xmas alone .. To say I spent Warneys last Xmas with him & his family is so sad but one I will cherish .. all of us eating Turkey ,beef ,the usual Xmas trimmings & the King to stick to his Lasagne sandwich’s with bread rolls plastered with butter .. that’s Warney … the superstar .. the greatest .. friends to world superstars .. everyone wanted to be around him but ultimately he was just a normal guy who could do incredible things.

“Leg spin is the hardest skill in our game & he mastered it .. he became a great poker player as he loved gambling but it was more the competition and trying to put the psych into his opponents that he loved … just like when he bowled .. my thoughts are with his mum Bridgette & dad Keith plus his 3 kids that I know he is immensely proud of .. Brooke , Summer & Jackson .. We are all thinking of you .. i am absolutely gutted to have a lost a great friend .. one thing is for sure Heaven will be a lively place now the King has arrived

“Love ya Shane x”

The news came out after Warne’s management released a statement announcing the 52-year-old had passed away from a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand.

“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived,” the statement reads.

“The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

After the eight-episode first season received positive reviews, and dominated social media conversations, Bridgerton quickly became the most watched series on Netflix at the time of its premiere – with a viewership of 82 million households.

In January 2021, just weeks after its launch, it was confirmed that Bridgerton would be returning for a second season – with the series creator going on to reveal in April 2021 that it had even been renewed for a third and fourth season too.

Fans were delighted when the series creator dropped a new teaser on Christmas Day (

Fans are eagerly anticipating the latest instalment of the regency-era drama drama from Shondaland, adapted from the bestselling series of novels by Julia Quinn.

On Christmas Day 2021, series producer Shonda Rhimes took to social media to officially announce the release date for season two – adding a new teaser clip to her post as a festive gift for fans.

“Prepare the carriages, dear reader. #Bridgerton is back on March 25th, 2022!” Shona captioned the short video on Facebook.

Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton, also shared the very same video with her fans on Twitter.

“A little Christmas gift from #Bridgerton to you,” the Irish star wrote on Christmas Day.

In the Netflix branded video, members of the Bridgerton cast read out a letter from Lady Whistledown who, of course, had the gossip and essential details.

*Bridgerton returns to Netflix on March 25 2022.

US Supreme Court to hear high-stakes environmental case

Issued on: 27/02/2022 – 02:30Modified: 27/02/2022 – 02:29

Washington (AFP) – The conservative-dominated US Supreme Court is to hear an environmental regulation case on Monday with potentially far-reaching implications for the Biden administration’s fight against climate change.

The high-stakes case concerns the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants, which produce nearly 20 percent of the electricity in the United States.

“This is the first major climate change case to be before the justices in 15 years and the court’s membership has dramatically changed since then,” said Richard Lazarus, a professor of environmental law at Harvard University.

In 2007, the Supreme Court, by a narrow majority, ruled that the EPA has the power to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants under the Clean Air Act of 1970.

The nation’s highest court has been radically transformed in recent years, however.

Former Republican president Donald Trump, a climate change skeptic hostile to government regulation of industry, nominated three justices to the nine-member court, giving conservatives a 6-3 majority.

“Because we have the most conservative Supreme Court that we’ve had in decades many of the people from the fossil fuel industry are asking the court to do all kinds of outrageous things to limit EPA authority,” said Robert Percival, director of the Environmental Law Program at the University of Maryland.

In 2015, Democratic president Barack Obama unveiled his Clean Power Plan, which was intended to combat global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal- and gas-burning plants and shifting energy production to clean sources such as solar and wind power.

The Clean Power Plan was blocked in the Supreme Court in 2016 and repealed by Trump, who replaced it with his own industry-friendly Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule.

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia threw out Trump’s ACE rule on the last day of his presidency, however, setting the stage for the case currently before the Supreme Court: West Virginia vs EPA.

‘Christmas gift’

West Virginia and several other coal-producing states asked the Supreme Court to intervene and define the powers of the EPA. By accepting the case, the court sent a signal to detractors of the agency and, more broadly, opponents of strong government regulatory authority.

Several environmental protection groups have submitted their own briefs to the Supreme Court in support of the EPA Several environmental protection groups have submitted their own briefs to the Supreme Court in support of the EPA MANDEL NGAN AFP/File

“This was like a Christmas gift to regulated industries,” Percival told AFP.

In its brief to the court, West Virginia accused the EPA of acting like “the country’s central energy planning authority.”

The EPA is “reshaping the power grids and seizing control over electricity production nationwide” without the express authorization of Congress, the state said.

No matter “how serious the problem,” West Virginia said, a federal agency “may not exercise its authority in a manner that is inconsistent with the administrative structure that Congress enacted into law.”

Harvard’s Lazarus said there is “good reason for concern” that the court will rule against the EPA.

The court could find that Congress is “powerless to delegate an administrative agency the authority to issue regulations that address major public health and welfare issues such as climate change,” he said.

“Or, that it can do so only with very precise statutory language enacted by Congress.

“In either event, given how partisan gridlock (is in Congress) such a ruling would seriously threaten the national government’s ability to address some of the nation’s most pressing problems including, but not limited to climate change.”

‘Free from oversight’

Several environmental protection groups have submitted their own briefs to the court in support of the EPA.

“In the absence of sustained efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” a group of climate scientists said, “the total increase in temperature could surpass 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) — leading to physical and ecological impacts that would be irreversible for thousands of years, if ever.”

“It is still possible to mitigate the human and economic costs of climate change,” they said, “if greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants and other sources can be reduced.

“But such mitigation will require significant coordination at the federal level.”

A group of Democratic lawmakers, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, submitted a brief urging the court to reject a case they said was being brought by those in favor of “an era free from oversight by the government.”

“Metrics that boomed in the 20th century, from average lifespan to economic productivity, were made possible by a slew of new regulations aimed at protecting the public welfare,” they said.

“As the excesses of powerful industries were reined in, however, these same regulations fostered resentment among those seeking to operate without such restraint.

“These cases are the direct product of that resentment.”

Cambs parents will still receive school holiday vouchers

Children in Cambridgeshire will continue to receive holiday vouchers after more than £3million was approved to cover the next year.

Low income families have been receiving vouchers to help cover the cost of food in the school holidays over the last year.

The vouchers had been paid for through a Government grant, but this funding has now come to an end.

Read more: Latest education news in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire County Council agreed when it set its budget last month that it would earmark £3.6 million of its own funds to continue running the voucher scheme.

At a meeting of the county council’s Children and Young People Committee yesterday (Tuesday, March 1) councillors approved for the earmarked funding to be used to cover the cost of the scheme for the next financial year.

Councillor Claire Daunton said at the meeting that the scheme was “even more urgently needed than ever”, in light of the current worldwide situation and the impact on prices.

Councillor Alex Bulat said she welcomed the continuation of the scheme and said she knew it had made a “real difference” to families in the Abbey ward in Cambridge, who she represents.

The service director for education and the voucher scheme at the county council, Jonathan Lewis, told councillors that he had received emails back from parents in previous rounds of the scheme, saying how grateful they were for the support and what a difference the holiday vouchers have had.

In the October Half Term last year 17,876 vouchers were claimed and in the Christmas holidays 18,926 vouchers. In addition to this, £10,759 was provided to college students in October Half Term and £22,629 in the Christmas holidays.

The same criteria used in the previous rounds of the scheme will continue to be used.

Those eligible for the vouchers include:

  • Children aged two-years-old who receive funded childcare and education under the income based criteria.
  • Children aged three and four-years-old who receive early years pupil premium under the income-based criteria.
  • Children aged four to 16-years-old who receive free school meals.
  • And Students in Sixth Forms eligible for free school meals, or for the 16-plus bursary.

The scheme will still apply to all children in Cambridgeshire schools, no matter where they live, but children who live in Cambridgeshire but attend schools outside of the county council district will also be eligible.

The county council said there is “relatively little” border crossing, apart from between Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, so the county council has said it plans to work with schools in Peterborough to identify these pupils.

The vouchers will be set at £15 a week, and a total of 12 holiday weeks will be covered under the current funding until February Half Term in 2023. Over this period parents or guardians of eligible children will receive a total £180.

Jay Blades teases return to Strictly after stint on Christmas Special

The Repair Shop host Jay Blades hinted he could end up back on Strictly Come Dancing after appearing as one of the celebrities on last year’s Christmas special.

The 2021 festive edition was won by singer-songwriter Anne-Marie, who was partnered with Graziano Di Prima.

But she faced stiff competition from fellow stars Jay, broadcaster Adrian Chiles, television presenter Mel Giedroyc, newsreader Moira Stuart and First Dates star Fred Sirieix.

With fans always speculating who might end up on the next series of the hit BBC show, previous contestant Jay addressed whether he’d look to make a comeback.

Chatting to Metro.co.uk at the premiere of Peaky Blinders this week, he far from ruled it out.

Jay told us: ‘Strictly was good. But it was really, really hard work. I mean, unbelievably hard.’

Paired up with Luba Mushtuk, the pair scored 34 points for an Only Fools And Horses-inspired jive.

Asked whether he would ever consider doing it all again for a full series, he teased: ‘Watch this space!’

He wouldn’t be the first contestant to do the double, with EastEnders star Maisie Smith previously competing in a Children in Need special before making it to the final in 2020.

The furniture restorer also responded to the lovely reaction from fans to his recent documentary titled Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51.

The one-off saw him learn to read on Zoom via the charity Read Easy during a six-month project

Having left school with no qualifications, and later being diagnosed with dyslexia, the presenter revealed his ultimate goal was to read a bedtime story to his teenage daughter Zola, ahead of her 16th birthday.

More: Strictly Come Dancing

On the comments from fans who tuned in, he said: ‘The feedback was so amazing, it just put me in a little shell, and I got a little bit overwhelmed.

‘I’m shocked at how many people liked it, it was unbelievable!’

Strictly Come Dancing is expected to return later this year to BBC One.

High Court rules Teletext Holidays broke law by withholding millions in refunds

Travel giants Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms entered liquidation just before Christmas, affecting tens of thousands of holidaymakers who were still waiting on refunds from the start of the Covid outbreak

Teletext Holidays (

Teletext Holidays broke consumer laws by failing to refund millions of pounds for cancelled holidays during the coronavirus pandemic, the High Court has found.

Deputy Judge Jonathan Richards ruled that Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays – which traded as Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms respectively – were legally required to return customers’ money within 14 days.

The court action was launched by watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which said the decision highlights the importance of travel firms “respecting consumers’ refund rights”.

Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms were placed into liquidation late last year, so the ruling does not affect their customers awaiting refunds for cancellated package holidays.

They are still encouraged to submit claims to the Travel Trust Association.

CMA chief executive Andrea Coscelli said: “This should be a wake-up call to any business that thinks that it doesn’t need to honour customers’ refund rights.

“Today’s ruling confirms the CMA’s view that Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms broke the law by not providing the refunds customers were due within 14 days for cancelled package holidays.

“While this ruling comes after these firms have been placed in liquidation, we hope the decision will make it easier for people to get their money back for a cancelled holiday in the future.

“Customers of Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms with outstanding refunds should get in touch with the Travel Trust Association.”

The CMA said in mid-October that its actions up to that point resulted in Truly Holidays – the parent company of Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays – paying more than £7million owed to package holiday customers.

MONEY TROUBLES: ‘Alpharooms and Teletext Holidays still owe me £460 – what’s going on?’

Agreements from LoveHolidays, Lastminute.com, Virgin Holidays and Tui UK were previously secured by the CMA after thousands of customers complained that the companies had failed to refund them for cancelled trips.

The travel sector has been one of the hardest hit during the pandemic and has faced the most scrutiny from the watchdog, which wrote to more than 100 firms reminding them of their responsibility to process all refunds within 14 days by law for any cancellations.

Entering liquidation means the company has effectively run out of money – any remaining funds will now be used to pay the people it owes money to.

To claim a Teletext refund, you will need to complete a claims form online, here.

For Alpharooms refunds, you will need to file a refund request and provide proof of payment and any reference numbers.

You may also be able to claim a refund if you paid on credit card, via Section 75.

Alternatively, if you paid on a debit card, speak to your bank as you may quality for a Chargeback claim – this is essentially when the transaction is reversed.

Commuters hit out as Tube boss calls strikers turkeys voting for Christmas

Thousands of early morning commuters were caught unaware by the RMT walk-out and were forced to cram onto buses as advice to work from home went unheeded.

A miserable morning, with roads heavily congested, was made worse by a near five per cent rise in Transport for London fares and a 3.8 per cent hike in national rail fares.

A Tube boss described the RMT as “turkeys voting for Christmas” and said the union’s decision to call 10,000 members out on strike would worsen TfL’s already dire finances.

Many passengers vented frustration that their commute had been hampered just as they began returning to the office following the pandemic.

Nine of the 11 Tube lines were completely shut with only the District and Central lines able to run shuttle services at their outer extremes, where the lines ran above ground.

Sean Reynolds, 40, who works in IT in Holborn said: “This is unacceptable. I have only just started going back to the office full time. Fares are going up and now this, it’s just not on.”

Silvia Perreira, 28, who works in retail said: “I’m in a job where I can’t work from home. Things are hard enough already with the cost of living going up these strikers what’s are they doing? Trying to make people poorer?”

Damian Callaghan, 38, an insurance worker said: “This is terrible for the economy. The Tube workers should be ashamed.”

Laura Diggins, 21, a receptionist, said: “Why do they have to punish commuters? I want the Tube workers to have a fair deal but this is a nightmare journey now.”

The RMT, which called 24-hour strikes on Tuesday and on Thursday over the threat to staff pensions and the loss of up to 600 station staff posts, said the action was “100 per cent solid”.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said the strike had been caused by the “political failure” of London mayor Sadiq Khan to shield TfL’s workforce from Government-ordered cuts.

Mr Khan said the action was “very disappointing”. He said: “This action is causing misery for Londoners and businesses alike and damaging TfL at the worst possible time.”

Andy Lord, TfL’s chief operating officer, described the walkout as “completely unnecessary” and “very frustrating” and appealed to the RMT to abandon Thursday’s strike.

Challenged on LBC whether TfL’s work from home advice was akin to “turkeys voting for Christmas”, Mr Lord said: “I think it is the RMT that are turkeys voting for Christmas.”

Speaking to the Standard, Mr Lord said “no proposals” had been tabled to change pension benefits. He said TfL had a “pretty good relationship” with the RMT, of which 4,900 members – 94 per cent of those taking part in the ballot – voted to strike.

Mr Lord said: “The challenge here is that some of their more militant membership and union leadership seem to believe that no change and the status quo is the only way forward.

“The Government have already provided £5bn to TfL. We need to become more efficient as an organisation.

“The frustration for all of us today is that the RMT are taking this action when we have not tabled anything [on pensions].

“I really want the RMT to talk with us and work with us. They have not published any further [strike] dates at this point. I encourage them to consider calling off Thursday’s strike. All it’s doing is making our financial position worse.”

The strikes, which end at a minute to midnight, are expected to cause knock-on problems until around 9am tomorrow and on Friday.

Dee Corsi, chief operating officer at New West End Company, said: “We strongly encourage RMT to call off these strikes to help commuters and business owners resume normality after an immensely difficult two years.”
